Rydde
App for Organizing Cleanup Events Across Norway
The Rydde app enables users to plan, register, and monitor cleanup events across Norway — supporting waste reporting, volunteer community building, and providing data for scientific research.
Challenge
Littered beaches pose a real threat to people and the environment — discarded nets, ropes, and other waste can cause accidents, contaminate water, and disrupt ecosystems. Previously, local Norwegian communities cleaned up their surroundings independently, with no organized collaboration, and researchers lacked comprehensive data on the types and locations of waste.
Solution
Escola built the Rydde mobile and web app, which enables users to:
  • Plan and register cleanup events on a map (public and private)
  • Invite friends and communicate between volunteers.
  • Post photos from events and record the quantity and type of collected waste.
  • Apply for cost reimbursements and "adopt" a stretch of Norway.
  • Analyze data broken down by county, municipality, and waste type.
  • View detailed event results and an event calendar.
The project was delivered using SCRUM methodology, with React Native, React, Kotlin, Swift, and OpenStreetMaps — providing stable, scalable infrastructure ready for a large user base.
Results
  • Over 4,250 cleanup events across Norway in 2020, involving 38,000 volunteers.
  • More than 9,500 km of coastline cleaned and 1,800 tonnes of waste collected.
  • In 2021, over 850 events were held, with 4,000 volunteers collecting 145 tonnes of waste.
  • Enabled community building and event planning up to six months in advance.
  • Provided researchers with detailed data for analysis and preventive action.
