ORLEN Capital Group
The largest fuel corporation in Poland, operating six distinct digital platforms: ORLEN VITAY, ORLEN Pay, ORLEN Charge, vitay.pl, Energa, and ORLEN mBOK (formerly PGNiG OD). The VITAY loyalty program operates on nearly 6.5 million devices and serves over 5 million active customers. In August 2024, users completed over 10 million transactions using the app — a 42% increase year-over-year.

Our goal
Designing and implementing a unified authentication system for the entire ORLEN Capital Group. Six systems built by different organizations, operating on different technological platforms, required integration under a single login mechanism — without losing user data and without disrupting service continuity.

Scope of work:
  • designing the digital identity system architecture,
  • developing the authentication system,
  • integrating six separate platforms,
  • migrating user data while preserving transaction history and loyalty points,
  • ensuring GDPR compliance,
  • technological consulting for designing authentication flows.
Technical challenges
Digital identity fragmentation
Every user utilizing the full ORLEN ecosystem had to manage six separate accounts and sets of login credentials. Each new service meant a new account and a new barrier between the customer and the ecosystem.

Integration of heterogeneous systems
Six platforms built by different organizations, on different technology stacks, serving different customer segments.

Common authentication mechanism
This required solving compatibility issues at the architectural level of each individual system.

Migration without data loss
Users already had transaction histories and accumulated VITAY points in existing accounts. Migrating to ORLEN ID had to maintain complete data continuity during their first login through the new system.

Scale and security
An error in the authentication layer impacts every user of every service simultaneously. The system had to meet strict GDPR requirements and handle millions of active users without any disruptions.
Architecture and key solutions
Single Sign-On for the entire Capital Group
ORLEN ID acts as the central authentication point for all the group's platforms. A user logs in once and can navigate the entire ecosystem without re-entering credentials. The system allows users to connect or disconnect individual services from a single account at any time.

History-preserving account migration
Users who previously had accounts in VITAY or ORLEN Pay can link them to ORLEN ID during their first login. The entire transaction history and accumulated loyalty points are preserved without requiring any manual intervention from the user.

GDPR compliance and data management
The system allows users to delete their ORLEN ID account at any time. If they do, all connected services are automatically unlinked, and the user regains access to them via new, separate login credentials. No data is lost in the process.

Enterprise-grade rollout
ORLEN Charge was the first service to transition exclusively to ORLEN ID logins — a strategic design decision proving that the system serves as the foundational infrastructure for the Group's digital architecture, rather than just an optional add-on.
Efffects
The deployment was executed without any disruptions to service continuity and with zero loss of user data. ORLEN has officially announced the expansion of ORLEN ID to additional products and services across the Group, positioning it as the underlying infrastructure for their target super-app.
